Seasickness is something which does not effect everyone, and can occure to even the most experimented sailors. It often happens to people who are not used to sailing. It is caused by the boat going up and down and the body not being able to cope with it. And then you get sick. This is due to your mind and body, because your mind knows you are not moving, but feels movement it is lost and then reacts badly. The same effect can happen in a car if you do not look outside or do not have a view of movement. It can also be caused by very rough weather conditions and the ship moving up and down really big waves. Solutions exist for this problem. It is possible to buy anti-seasick pills, but it does not work for everyone.

The bermuda triangle

Is an area in the North Atlantic sea also known as the Devil’s Triangle. Over the years multiple planes and ships have disappeared mysteriously in this region. Some believe it is caused by aliens or by paranormal effects. A logical explanation has jet not been found, but it could also be due to secret military experiments, which we will probably never find out about. It could also simply be tales which have been exagerated and created a small horror story.

There are other simple explanations. These disappearances could be caused by natural disasters such as hurricanes or very strong winds. This could explain why some planes simply vanished. Hurricanes are known to form in those areas and the gulf stream also flows through those waters.

Rogue waves could also be the cause of ships sinking. These are enourmous waves which can occure far out at sea and are know to have sunk the biggest cargos in the world. These waves have also been called killer or freak waves due to their strenght and outsanding height.

The biggest finishing country is China which covers about a third of the worlds production. However they do not always apply finishing regulations. For example they fish a lot of sharks to get their fins which is very nice when made into a soup. But to same expenses what they often do is once they have caught a shark they cut of it’s fins while it is stil alive and then simply through the poor animal back in the water. It will then suffer a lot of pain and will not be able to swim any more. Therefore it will sink and die of starvation. That is a horrible death. A lot of the chinese fisherman seem to ignore the rules and regulations in order to gain more profit and therefore get enough money to feed there familys. Something must be done, but how can we fight this phenomena ? A good way to start would to encourage China to help these fisherman and also impose stricter controls.

Whale fishing

China is also known to fish a lot of whales. Something that organisations such as green peace are vary opposed to. Fisher man often over fish this already small population of animals. And they are often killed in cruel ways.

Over fishing

This has become a big problem recently. As the demand expands more fishing gets done. But the rate is too high. Some species can get extinct if such serious fishing is not stop. Several radical measures have been taken by countrys in the past years. There was for example a very strick regulation or even ban on Cod fishing. This resulted in many countrys not being able to serve that fish. However it is better that way. By being too greedy we could eradicate most fish and then end up with nothing. That would be a bigger problem.

The union

As a independent union we seak to protect the rights of maritime professional. Going out at sea is always an adventure, their are many risks as we face nature in one of it’s most powerfull ways. Many have died and disapeared out at sea by accident, non lucky or bad apreciation of the weather conditions. Our goal is to make sure we get quality jobs, defend our pay and conditions.

Shipping business

Most people are not aware but boats and sailors are still around and very important. Cargo boats are one of the main ressources transport of our times. Planes are faster but they cannot carry so much and they cost much more.

Piracy risks

In the marine history there has always been pirates, when we talk of pirates everyone thinks of men who fought with swords and canons and think that was a long time ago. However there still are pirates, they are after the same think : goods and money, they simply use different weapons and are just as dangerous . Recently stories have been written about the pirates on the coasts of South Africa and in China. These are people who are extremely dangerous, they have nothing to lose and will not hesitate to execute hostages. Because they attack using small and quick boats it is hard to defend against them. And they often out number the crew since crews on cargo ships are often quite small. Therefore Piracy is real, it is a menace to our profession and to our lives. Security measures must be taken by compagnies or even contrys to protect the cargos and the goods they are carrying

Oil cargos

There are a lot of oil cargos travelling on the sea’s and there have been several cases of very bad accidents which have polluted the water and killed thousands of animals such as fish, seagulls and other birds. They accidents are often due to very bad weather conditions, elements over which we do not have any control.
